Peckett Chimney

 Another commission from my friend Ben, this time a chimney for a scratchbuilt 009 Sena Sugar Estates Peckett 0-6-0ST. This was turned from brass using my Unimat 3.

One of the nice things about this job is that the part is finished ready to sit on the loco rather than to be used as a casting pattern, which means that I can make the top lip and flange a little finer. Its also hollow as Ben didn't want a locating peg underneath.

I'm quite pleased with this, and I'm looking forward to seeing it fitted.

Wooden knitting needle repair.

My wife is a keen knitter, albeit new to the craft. She recently bought herself a pair of 9mm wooden needles, she prefers wood to plastic or metal. The problem was one of our dogs decided to chew the end off one needle;

An easy fix, I faced off the end of needle in the lathe and used my compound slide set at 10 degrees to turn the taper;

Both needles were so treated, to make a matching pair. After a light sanding followed by a quick wipe of Danish oil they were as good as new, although now approx. 12mm shorter;

Another reason to own a lathe.

As for the dog, she also unraveled several balls of new wool. Anyone want a dog?
