I think it was from Iain Rice's writings that I first read about rubbing sticks, which are simply strips of wet and dry glued onto suitably sized pieces of wood. I find 1/4" square stripwood ideal used with 600 and 800 grit paper.
Used for cleaning up castings, etches, stray solder etc. They takes minutes to knock up, I've just been re-covering mine with fresh wet and dry hence the post;
The tapered ends help get into those awkward spots. I find these to be an indespensable part of my toolkit.

A great idea, Paul. Now there's a Costa's in Porthmadog I will have a use for all the wood stirrers!
ReplyDeleteThanks Iain, I've never thought to use coffee stirrers. Time to make up some more sticks!
ReplyDeleteHi Paul,
ReplyDeleteJust had a vey pleasant look various old blog entries of yours. So much good stuff on here!
I remember the Ian Rice tip too, and use it occasionally for one-off jobs. But I hadn't thought of making permanent sticks like this, think I will try that. Thanks!
Thanks for the kind words Mikkel.
ReplyDeleteIain Rice certainly inspired my modelling, in fact I've just been looking at some of his articles whilst thumbing through old (early eighties) copies of Model Railways whilst searching in vain for a half-remembered article on turning boiler fittings.
