Desolder braid, or solder wick, is one of those items that every etched kit builder should have in their toolbox. It's also one of those items that I'd rather not need as I mostly use it for cleaning up mistakes! It is simply a woven copper braid that is used to soak up excess molten solder;
In the photo below the writing on the left side has been obscured with solder;
Flux is applied to the solder and the braid laid over the top, then heat is applied to the braid;
The braid sucks up the solder leaving a light layer behind which can be removed with a fibreglass scratch brush if necessary;
The used part of the braid is then discarded. Sometimes it can take two or three attempts to remove all of the excess solder. It really comes into its own when used to clean up solder after a joint or assembly has been unsoldered and needs cleaning prior to re-assembly.
Desolder braid is available from Eileen's Emporium (usual disclaimer).
Paul.
