Today saw me in North Wales on an unplanned visit to help a friend out. So, after a dog walk in a disused quarry in Cwm Penmachno, and watching my wife swim in Llyn Gwynant followed by an excellent breakfast in Caffi Gwynant, we headed for Llanberis.
The Llanberis Lake Railway is a nice little line that runs along Llyn Padarn (good canoeing venue!) following the trackbed of a disused 4' gauge slate railway. Elider, a smart little Quarry Hunslet, provided the motive power;
The weather veered between being merely overcast to torrential rain, not great for photography, but this shot I rather like;
After my train ride I visited the Slate Museum, which is an excellent place to spend an hour or so (or even longer!). And its free! Again the wet weather and low light made for poor photography (at least in my hands), but here's a few items of stock that I found interesting;
If the above wagon seems familiar, its because I've built the RT Models kit.
I should point out that there's far more in the museum than just wagons! The best part of the museum is the working 50' diameter waterwheel. Which I couldn't photograph easily, so you'll just have to go and see it for yourselves!
An enjoyable day out. I'll be back sometime, hopefully in nicer weather.
Paul.

I love your third photo. The Slate Museum is a wonderful resource, and rather under-appreciated. The lack of funding is beginning to show now which pains me. I wouldn't mind paying a fiver to get in to such a fantastic museum, yet all I hear is people complaining about the car parking charges. Anyway, glad you enjoyed your visit...I am hoping for a "Father's day" out there soon...
ReplyDeleteDani rather enjoyed the museum as well (she didn't join me for a train ride, which is fair enough). She found the miners cottages particulary interesting.
ReplyDeleteIt is a shame about the lack of funding, but if there was even a modest charge I'm sure that the footfall would decrease.
Good to see you've been out there. I was there the week before and had a ride behind Elidir. Driver was also fantatsic, opening the firebox doors so that my little boy could see the fire!
ReplyDeleteThe real question is why wasn't your wife up the weekend before doing the Slateman? It would have given her ample distraction while you went on the railway and around the museum and she'd have had a good bit of race practice before the Outlaw Half.
They did come across as a friendly bunch at the railway. Did I mention the Ivor mug that I bought from the gift shop?
ReplyDeleteAs for your question, it comes down to simple economics. Dani would have much prefered to do a shorter distance event before the Outlaw Half, in fact one of her fellow club members did. Maybe next year.
