An unidentified Freightliner 66 framed by a semaphore signal taken today on an unremarkable Buxton Friday;
The loco has pulled up whilst running round a stone train, the loop is situated behind the signal box. I stood on the end of platform 1 to take this shot. I don't usually hang around the end of platforms, but I noticed that a footpath that I regularly tread, which runs behind Buxton diesel shed, has been closed and heavy machinery plastered with words like 'demolition' has been seen behind the fence. So it looks like the old diesel depot, long abandonded, will soon be no more.
At the moment it looks like this;
The footpath runs behind the back wall, past the fuel tanks seen below.
A skip lorry and digger stand where locos once sat;
Note the silver birch growing between the tracks.
I never saw the depot in its heyday but I've always hoped that it might see use again. But to be honest it has to go, the shed roof is falling in, there are cracks in the walls, it is a magnet for vandals who break in on a regular basis (I'm sure that the local constabulary will be pleased to see it gone) and the tanks are an eyesore, even to a lover of grime like myself. I did once go into the shed myself many years ago, there is a door opening onto the path behind which I once found open. A quick look around revealed a ventilated van still sat inside, but I had no camera with me and the door was soon plated over. The path behind is dark and could be quite forbidding after dark, when the local street drinkers light fires and do what whatever it is that street drinkers do.
I just hope that good use is made of the space.
Paul.
(With apologies to Roger Siviter!)
That top shot is very nice, Paul. How quickly the birch saplings colonise railway tracks...I think they must be approaching climax vegetation in this country. Our Blaenau-Traws branch is impassable with birch trees now, in the cuttings at least...and the track is still there...somewhere!
ReplyDeleteThank you Iain, but I didn't think it great. The framing is ok but the light on the day was typically dull.
DeleteI must get back there and take some more photos of the shed, I did note the hidden vent van has been dragged out so I at least want to capture that before it disappears.
