Another Narrow Planet/6point5 R.A.R. gunpowder van

There were two versions of this kit (it seems to be discontinued now), to both 9mm and a 6.5mm gauges. I've previously built the 009 version, and now it's the turn of the 6point5 variant.
Originally the body was built using a printed shell with etched nickel silver inserts, however this was I believe quite costly to produce so later kits had a cast resin body. Both versions use a printed chassis. This build uses the cast body.
The kit comprises of the cast body, printed chassis, 6,5mm gauge wheels and tiny neothingyum magnets for couplings. Here's the body and chassis cyano'd together;

Note the coupling pin, I'm using link and pin couplings again. I've also filled in the holes in the end of the frames provided for coupling magnets.
The 6.5mm gauge chassis is, as you'd expect, narrower than the 9mm gauge version;

As I'm using 6mm gauge I've turned my own wheels, to 5.6mm dia., seen below next to the supplied 4mm dia. wheels;

The supplied wheels are really too small for the prototype, but with them fitted the coupling height matches Busch Feldbahn stock. My 5.6mm wheels bring the coupling height up to my preferred 6mm, and are closer to the prototype's diameter.
Painting started with a coat of Hycote red oxide primer, decanted from the rattlecan and applied with my Badger 200NH. The main body colour is Vallejo 70.982 Cavalry Brown with Vallejo 70.862 Black Grey used for the roof and chassis, the body being sprayed and the chassis brushed. As usual the number was done with a mapping pen and white ink. Vallejo matt varnish finishes the job off.

Alongside my 009 version;

And all of my 006 stock so far;

Another enjoyable build, and I'll be looking out for another unbuilt kit.

Paul.

  1. I have one of these to build , to pose next to my rather larger 7/8ths version.

    1. I think it's quite cute. A train of them snaking behind a suitable loco would be splendid.

    2. Usefully the 7/8ths version is only the same size as a typical 16mm van

  2. As the person who designed the kit originally it's nice to see another one of these made up, especially as I don't actually have one of the resin versions myself.

    Looking at the two versions side-by-side I'm impressed with how well the resin casting worked. James Hilton built the kit version that the casting was taken from which probably helped!

    I don't know how many resin versions were produced but I'm guessing it depended on the life of the mould, so I don't think there will necessarily be another run. What I should do is see if I can sensibly print the complete body; something I couldn't do when I first designed it as the plank detail disappeared completely when using the Shapeways FUD material, due to the support material that was needed (hence the odd choice of a printed frame with etched inserts).

    1. The casting is ok, but the bottom edge of the ends isn't great. Luckily it isn't too noticeable.
      Printing the body in one piece sounds like a good option. Home printers are revolutionising the hobby (for better or worse!).

    2. Yes, even though my resin printer is one of the first models that was within the budget of most modellers it still gives results that are as good if not better than some FUD prints I had from shapeways. With shapeways having now gone bust I'm going to have to see which of my kits I can print at home if I want to do any more batches; although without a way to print the brass chassis I guess I've done the last batch of Hundson-Hunslet diesel kits.
