I've been thinking of buying one of these for a while now, and seeing one on a trade stand at a recent show I gave in and finally bought one. Made by North West Short Line, its basically a mini-guillotine for cutting styrene and stripwood, the design allowing repeat cutting to length using a stop clamped to the bed. The base is die-cast aluminium with an integral cutting mat. The tool comes well packaged in a strong box;
The cutter itself is a single-edged razor blade, easily sourced and replaced, but being 39mm long does limit the width of material cut. However, anything wider would be better 'scored and snapped'. So for I've tried it on 5mm square stripwood and .060" styrene (32mm wide).
Two mitre guides are included, allowing angles of 30, 45, 60, and 90 degrees to be accurately cut. The right angled end is also used as a stop for repeatedly cutting material to length.
Another nicely made tool to add to my collection, and a better purchase than yet more kits that will just sit in the cupboard waiting for attention...
The only downside is the price, but good tools never come cheap!
Mine came from NGTrains (usual desclaimer).

Hi Paul, just had a pleasant read through your blog. I've missed your entries over on RMweb! Thanks especially for this tip on the Chopper, just what I've been looking for. Looks sturdy and those mitre guides are useful.
ReplyDeleteThanks Mikkel.
