New Mills narrow gauge.

In the yard of Canal Foundry, on Albion Road in New Mills opposite the sweet factory, is some inlaid narrow gauge track from what must have been a handworked system. I know little of this yard apart from that it's no longer a foundry but is now home to several small businesses (including a record label's warehouse), one of which still has a forge in place but long out of use.

There's just a single length of track remaining, which can be seen below in the centre of the photo  going from left to right;

It goes from the skip and once ran into a building;

The waggon turntable, once other tracks would have connected to it;

Behind the door the floor has been raised obliterating any track remains;

Another view;

And a final look at the turntable;

Any other track remains have been covered up and lost.

It would be interesting to know more about the site, but so far I've drawn a blank.

  1. I like little interesting finds like this; the one local to me has now been tarmacked over unfortunately. I've had a quick look through the old maps I can access at the University and unfortunately none of them show any details in the yard for Canal Foundry.

    1. I've not found anything either, other than the site was once occupied by John Hawthorn & Sons, Millwrights and Engineers. The track was a chance find, Cold Spring Records have their warehouse in the yard and I was picking up a couple of cds one day when I stumbled upon the track. It took me until yesterday to photograph it tho'.
