I've finally sorted out the spectacle plates on this loco, I fitted them too high initially (see
this post) so off they came. The etchings were prised off with a curved scalpel blade, without damage, and the upper part of the window opening filled with a scrap of black .040" plasticard and a spot of Humbrol filler.
In the photo below the left cab side widow (right side in photo) has been filled and the spectacle plate glued in its new lower postion whilst the right cab side window still needs reworking;
However, the relationship between the spectacle plate and the handrail still isn't perfect, the handrail should be in line with the middle of the curved portion of the 'plate, the fact that it isn't shows that something, or more likely a combination of things, is out;
I'm going to leave it alone now as I feel that I've spent enough time on this part of the model. Its better than it was, and I've learned a valuable lesson from this exercise.
Paul.
That is so frustrating. Your blog post sent me scurrying for my prototype files...and you are right, that handrail is halfway up the curved part of the spectacle. I would be clutching at the straw that all the photographs are taken from a much lower angle...look at your model from a scale six feet high and perhaps it will be right, allowing for perspective! You have made a grand job of correcting the error, at any rate.
ReplyDeleteIts one of those details that isn't particulary obvious unless you spend a lot of time staring at drawings and photos of the prototype, but once you do spot it you can't ignore it! If only the toolmaker made the cab windows the right size and put them in the right position in the first place!
DeleteI strongly recommend finding a copy of Modelling Railways Illustrated vol.1 no.2 Nov-Dec 1993 which contains some first class drawings in both 4 and 7mm scales.
'Morill' was probably the best model railway magazine that we've ever had, its a shame that it disappeared so quickly.
Thank you for the reference to Morill, I will scour Ebay for that. In a tidying-up spree I gave a pile of mags to the WHR...I knew I would regret that! I did buy the magazine regularly until it was taken over by a new editor and went downhill ...in the Rice/Farquharson era it was absolutely superb...what a shame it folded.
ReplyDeleteI had a subscription to Morill until the change of editor when, like you say, it went downhill. I've kept them all as well, usually I cut up old modelling magazines for the interesting articles and throw the remains in the recycling bin, with the exception of MRJ. Cutting up the Journal seems sacriligous somehow...
