Meridian Models Penrhyn workmans coach.

Here's a nice little plastic kit which went together very well, apart from a little filling where the corners meet. Being plastic its rather light so I added a little ballast by glueing lead strip, sold as aquarium plant weight, under the middle two seats where it is hardly noticable. This brings the weight up to 9 grams.

Its finished in Revel Aqua Color [sic] Purple Red airbrushed on, which I feel suits it rather well. For the interior I wanted the seats to look like they've been finished with a dark varnish so I used Citadel Rhinox Hide (I like Citadel paints, they brush nicely, are available in most towns and have funny yet somehow cool names!). To finish a coat of Phoenix Precision matt varnish was applied with an airbrush.

Couplings are Greenwich, etched brass and neater than Bemo, with the operating tail cut away.

Paul.

  1. It's an excellent kit, but you definitely found better coloured paints to use than I did. I love that purple red colour. Bilious Green was always one of my favourite Citadel paints, purely from it's name, although it looks as if they don't make that particular colour any more.

  2. To my uneducated eye Purple Red looks fairly close to the original colour of these coaches, at least from the few photos that I've seen. It does help that I've used it before, on a Hellingly Hospital loco. And I like it!

'Bubonic Brown', 'Vomit Brown', 'Snot Green', someone at Citadel has an odd sense of humour!

  3. My son had a serious Warhammer phase a while back and when it blew over he gave me all his paints. They are great, I agree with you and the names are fun...much better than "airframe grey" or "Dunklegrun" etc on the Humbrol tinlets of yore. This colour does indeed look excellent and the couplers are very discreet, as you say. Are yoiu going to weather it...a brave move on such a super finish but it would look rather nice I reckon!

  4. There's no plans to weather this one Iain, although it has had a very light wash of Citadel 'Devlan Mud' ink. The matt varnish tones it down quite nicely.
